About Vodka

The word “vodka” means “little water” in Russian, its country of origin. The popular spirit contains mostly water and alcohol and one or more of the following – potato, barley, wheat, corn, molasses, or beets.

Today, there are hundreds of vodka brands available, including the big names like Smirnoff, Absolut, Ketel One, Grey Goose, and SKYY. There are also many small, independent distilleries around the globe that are creating interesting small-batch and boutique vodkas. One of those is the award-winning Tito’s Handmade Vodka.

Tito’s Story

Tito’s Handmade Vodka was founded by Bert (“Tito”) Beveridge II in Austin, Texas, in 1997, with $90,000 he borrowed on 19 different credit cards.

Beveridge is a 5th generation native Texan who had never distilled anything in his life. His work had included running a dynamite seismic crew in Venezuela and Colombia, a drilling company in Houston, and as an environmental engineer and realtor. In his free time, he dabbled in spirits as a hobby, making flavored vodka as gifts for friends using a pot still.

There was no legal distillery in Texas previously, but Beveridge managed to secure a permit and established the Mockingbird Distillery and produced 1,000 cases Tito’s Handmade Vodka in his first year.

Sales and distribution of the vodka exploded in 2001 when it won the Double Gold Medal for vodka at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, which meant that all of the judges selected Tito’s as the best out of 72 competing vodkas from around the world.

Today, Tito’s has upended the vodka industry, becoming the best-selling vodka brand in the U.S., selling more than one million cases per week.

Tito’s Handmade Vodka is distilled six times from yellow corn in an old-fashioned pot still (unusual for vodka and more labor-intensive than a column still), just like fine single malt scotches and high-end French cognacs. The corn gives it a great body and makes the vodka completely gluten-free.

Tito’s is 80-proof, or 40 percent alcohol by volume. It has a very smooth taste and is rich and luscious, with a mild, sweet flavor that works well on the rocks, in a martini, and in your favorite vodka cocktails. (Try it in a “TitoRita” while on vacation on Grand Cayman!)
