About Tequila
Tequila is a distilled beverage that is made from at least 51 percent of the sugars of the blue agave plant, a succulent plant that is native to Jalisco, Mexico, which is cooked, mashed, fermented, double distilled, and then sometimes aged in barrels.
Tequila production is highly regulated and must be made from the fermented sap of blue agave plants that are grown in one of five Mexican states that surround the city of Tequila – Jalisco, Guanajuato, Michoacan, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas.
There are only about 150 distilleries in all of Mexico and most of them make tequila for multiple brands. There are currently about 2,000 tequila brands, including:
Jose Cuervo – Jose Cuervo is the world’s largest and best-selling brand of tequila. The brand is family-owned and is run by the 11th generation of descendants of Don José Antonio de Cuervo who, in 1758, was issued a land grant by King Ferdinand VI of Spain in the town of Tequila, Jalisco, and began to produce tequila commercially. Today Jose Cuervo makes many different tequila products, including Especial®, Tradicional® 100% agave tequila, Platino®, and Reserva de la Familia®.
Don Julio –Don Julio tequila is distilled, manufactured, bottled, sold, and distributed from its corporate facility in Jalisco, Mexico. The agave for Don Julio’s tequila is grown in the highland area of Atotonilco on the family estate. Don Julio makes many different tequila products, including Blanco, Reposado, Añejo, 70 Añejo Claro, 1942 Añejo, and Real Extra Añejo, which was awarded double gold medals at the 2008 and 2011 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
Herradura – Tequila Herradura is a distiller located in Amatitán, Jalisco, Mexico. It was founded in 1870 by Félix López, and the business remained in the family for over 125 years. The company makes other tequila products such as El Jimador, which is the best-selling tequila in Mexico. Tequila products sold under the Herradura name are 100% blue agave and include Blanco, Blanco Suave, Reposado, Antiguo, Añejo, Selección Suprema, and Ultra Añejo.
Patrón – Patrón is the best-selling premium tequila in America. It was founded in Jalisco, Mexico in 1989 by John Paul DeJoria and Martin Crowley. The company also owns Pyrat rum and Ultimat vodka. Patrón does not own their own agave fields. Instead, they choose the best agave plants in the world by offering the highest price on the market. Eight families provide 80 to 95% of Patrón’s agave plants.
