Steak and Whiskey

What Liquor Goes Good with Steak?Whiskeys, in particular, have the ability to hold up to the big, beefy flavor of a steak. Bourbon and rye are great choices. Scotch also works well, especially with grilled steak, because its smoky notes mimic the flavor of the grill. A few of our best suggestions follow.

Ribeye: A well-marbled ribeye steak needs something robust to cut through the fat, and a richly peated Islay Scotch will fit the bill. Try the combination of rich malt and big smoke that Ardbeg Uigeadail or Lagavulin 16 offer.

Filet/Sirloin: The best options for leaner cuts include bourbon or Canadian whisky to complement the savory meat and lower fat content. A Porterhouse or bacon-wrapped filet accompanies by Woodford Reserve Kentucky bourbon is heavenly. Or try Crown Royal Reserve Canadian whiskey, which is mellow and balanced and has sharp, nutty top notes of rye.

Grilled steak: When grilling your steak, consider that whiskey with some sweetness goes quite well with smoky flavors. Choose a New York strip steak, ribeye or filet (or any other prime cut) and pair it with a rich, full-bodied Macallan Scotch, a sherried Scotch like Glenmorangie Lasanta, or even Swindlers Hand Crafted Colorado Light Whiskey.

Steak and Wine

Wine is a wonderful complement to steak. In most cases, red wines are the best choice, but the cut, the way you cook the meat, and the sauces you serve with it can affect the match-up.

Cabernet Sauvignon: This full-bodied red wine is primarily known for its blackberry, currant and dark cherry flavors that stand up to most any steak, including those prepared with smoke, marinades or pepper. The high alcohol levels and tannins cut through the fat, making the steak more flavorful and the wine smoother and less bitter. Try Yellow Tail Cabernet Sauvignon from South Australia.

Zinfandel: Zinfandel may be the world’s most versatile wine grape. It has high acidity and moderate tannins, making it a great match for steaks with good amounts of fat, such as rib eyes, T-bones and Porterhouse steaks. Try the excellent Frog’s Leap Zinfandel from California’s Napa Valley.

Malbec: Malbec is one of France’s most heavily produced and popular wines. It’s a dry wine that features a rich, full bodied taste with berry-like fruit flavors. It is also cultivated and produced in large quantities in Argentina, where it is considered an ideal pairing for beef. We recommend Achaval Ferrer Malbec Mendoza from the mountainous ranges of the Andes in Argentina.
