Your Guide to Gin

You may recognize gin as the primary ingredient in a classic Martini or Gin and Tonic, but there is much more to learn about this versatile spirit.

What Is Gin?

Gin is a clear spirit that is made by distilling fermented grain and a number of other botanicals, one of which must be juniper berries. Essentially it is pure flavorless vodka that is re-distilled with botanical ingredients.

Gin is often thought of as England’s national spirit. By 1726, London had 1,500 working stills, and there were 6,287 places where you could buy gin. Centuries before gin was born, juniper was already being imported to England from the Mediterranean and is considered the best in the world. To be classified as gin in the United States, the liquor must contain a minimum of 40 percent alcohol by volume (ABV).

  • Gin was originally used for medicinal purposes, particularly by the British Royal Navy, who mixed it with lime to stop scurvy and with angostura to settle the stomach while at sea.
  • Thanks to Ian Fleming’s James Bond character, the martini became the most sought-after cocktail, made from a mixture of gin and dry vermouth, shaken not stirred.
  • Gin and tomato juice were a popular hangover cure in New York City in the 1920s, long before the vodka-based Bloody Mary made its debut.
  • The gin and tonic became popular in the British colonies because quinine in the tonic water was discovered to be a powerful deterrent to mosquitoes that carried malaria. Gin was added to mask the bitterness.
  • When you want to compare gins, bring the liquor to room temperature and dilute each with an equal measure of water.
  • Almost half the world’s production of gin is drunk in the Philippines, with an estimated 50 million cases consumed annually.
  • Gin doesn’t have the same geographical restrictions as some other spirits, so it’s not necessary to produce “London Dry Gin” in London, or even England. The name is just a process designation.

Although there are hundreds of varieties of commercially available gin, the top five best-selling brands in the world (outside the Philippines, which has its own domestic brand, Ginebra San Miguel) are:

    1. Gordon’s
    2. Bombay Sapphire
    3. Tanqueray
    4. Beefeater
    5. Seagram’s
