10 Fun Facts About Champagne

  1. Champagne is just a sparkling wine. It is a blend of the juices of three primary grapes, typically Pinot Noir (red), Pinot Meunier (red), and Chardonnay (white). Not all of the grape juice goes into Champagne; some is also used to produce still wine, vinegar, fortified wines, and spirits.
  2. Champagne is not a grape or a style of wine. It is named for a region in northeast France. The beverage cannot legally be called Champagne if the grapes are not grown in this region.
  3. Several Champagne houses in Reims, France, such as Taittinger, age their Champagne in mazes of underground chalk caves that were originally excavated in about 80 BC by the Ancient Romans. The Taittinger caves are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  4. Champagne releases 30 bubbles per second. Smaller bubbles indicate higher-quality Champagne.
  5. There are about 100 pounds per square inch (psi) of pressure inside a Champagne bottle, or about three times the pressure inside the average car tire.
  6. Champagne corks are straight before being put into the bottle. The mushroom shape develops because the cork absorbs the carbon dioxide in the bottle.
  7. When opening a bottle of champagne, the cork can travel up to 40 miles per hour, so take care where you point it!
  8. Your bubbly will stay bubblier if you drink it from a “flute.” Dry your Champagne flutes with a cloth towel to see more bubbles.
  9. According to her biographer, Marilyn Monroe once bathed in champagne. 350 bottles were required to fill up the tub.
  10. The late British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was a famous Champagne-lover. He reportedly drank 42,000 bottles of the bubbly between 1908 and 1965. The Pol Roger Champagne house made a special bottle that was served to him each morning.
