The Appeal of Rum

Rum is a classic ingredient in some of the most popular cocktails, enjoyed straight, and serves as a surprising source of nutrition and health benefits!

The sweet, rich liquid joy that is rum is distilled from the byproducts of harvesting and processing sugarcane. Either sugarcane juice or molasses is distilled and then aged within wooden barrels. Historically, this spirit comes from the Caribbean and West Indies and was enjoyed by sailors and pirates as a source of hydration and nutrition to avoid scurvy.

Rum has been shown to be a natural blood thinner and chock full of copper, iron, manganese, phosphorus, zinc, Vitamin B1, and potassium. You’ll not find a more nutritious spirit when looking for an ideal alcoholic beverage.

The four different types of rum include light/white rum, amber/golden rum, dark/black rum, and spiced rum. The lighter rums are frequently used in cocktails while the darker rums are sometimes used in mixed drinks but more often enjoyed straight or as a food ingredient.

If you’d like to experience rums produced right here on Grand Cayman, we suggest Seven Fathoms Rum or Governor’s Reserve, both produced locally by the Cayman Spirits Co. You can even tour their facilities and sample all of the rums and other spirits produced there.
