Wine Varietals & Food Pairings

When it comes to pairing wine with food, it doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are a few suggestions for the most popular white wine varietals, but don’t be afraid to be adventurous to find a combination you love!

Chardonnay: Chardonnay is medium to full bodied and known for its complex fruit flavors and aromas and rich, creamy texture. Try Jordan Chardonnay, one of the best from the Russian River Valley in Sonoma, California. It pairs well with:

  • Shellfish (shrimp, lobster, crab, scallops)
  • Oysters
  • Smoked salmon or trout
  • Roast chicken and turkey
  • Veal
  • Risotto and pasta
  • Mild Caribbean dishes with tropical fruit flavors

Chenin Blanc: This wine ranges from bone-dry, crisp and sparkling with a fruity aroma, to sweet dessert wine. Try Beringer Chenin Blanc from California. It pairs well with:

  • Seafood
  • Oysters
  • Sushi
  • Poultry
  • Japanese food
  • Spicy foods

Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris: Pinot Grigio (also known as Pinot Gris in France) is usually crisp, light, and has great acidity. Wines from Oregon are known for their lively pear flavor. Try a bottle of Hugel Pinot Gris Tradition from Alsace, France. It pairs well with:

  • Rich fish (salmon, tuna)
  • Shellfish
  • Chicken
  • Pasta
  • Spicy Asian dishes

Riesling: Flavors range from dry and stony to floral and sweet, and the best wines have great acidity that keeps the wine lively. We recommend a bottle of Blue Fish Riesling from Pfalz, Germany for a great value. It pairs well with:

  • Chicken
  • Pork
  • Shellfish
  • Pasta
  • Salads and vegetables
  • Sausages and deli meats
  • Southwestern foods

Sauvignon/Fumé Blanc: Depending on its ripeness, this grape can deliver interesting flavors. It is lean and crisp and a great alternative to Chardonnay. Try a bottle of the excellent Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. It pairs well with:

  • Fish (e.g., sole, swordfish, red snapper)
  • Shellfish (crab, scallops, clams)
  • Oysters
  • Pasta
  • Poultry
  • Soft goat cheese
