About White Wines

The world of wine can be daunting, and it’s tough to know where to begin. Today, wine is made in virtually every country in the world, but there is no better way to discover what you like than by tasting everything. Whether at home or in a restaurant, if you fall in love with a particular wine, be sure to take notes!

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is the world’s most famous white wine grape, one of the most widely planted, and beloved by people all over the world. Some of the best chardonnays come from France and California, but there are also fine examples from Italy, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Because they are casked in oak barrels, chardonnays can be very complex. They often have distinctive buttery aromas, hints of vanilla, and notes of spices like cinnamon and clove. Chardonnays pair well with mild cheeses, seafood, chicken, pork and fruity desserts. Try a bottle of the award-winning Jordan Chardonnay, one of the best from the Russian River Valley in Sonoma, California, and Ca’ del Bosco Chardonnay from Lombardy, Italy.

Sauvignon Blanc

Depending on its ripeness, this grape can deliver interesting flavors. It is now successfully grown in wine regions all over the world, including California, Chile, South Africa, northern Italy and Australia, and has become the signature white wine of New Zealand, where it features intense green citrus and berry fruit flavors.

Sauvignon Blanc is typically crisp with a citrusy zing and pairs well with fish, shellfish, chicken, pork, sushi, salads, and pasta dishes with creamy sauces. Try a bottle of the award-winning Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc from the Marlborough region of New Zealand or the Lail Vineyards Blueprint Sauvignon Blanc from California’s Napa Valley.

Pinot Grigio

The pinot grigio grape is a pink-skinned mutation of pinot noir. When produced in France, it is known as Pinot Gris. Many people’s favorites come from Italy, but France, Germany, California and Oregon do very well with the grape.

Pinot Grigio is low in acidity and is a medium-to-full bodied wine with a rich, floral bouquet. It pairs well with fish, shellfish, chicken, pastas with creamy sauces, and soft, mild cheeses. Try a bottle of the excellent Vie di Romans Pinot Grigio from Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy or the award-winning Cupcake Vineyards Pinot Grigio from Veneto, Italy.
