Pairing Wine & Grouper

Grouper is part of the sea bass family and can be found in tropical and warm temperate waters worldwide. The lean, moist fish has a distinctive yet mild flavor, large flakes and a firm texture. It can be prepared many different ways – baked, steamed, broiled, poached, grilled, pan fried, etc. As you think about how to pair your grouper with wine, consider if a sauce or seasoning will play a role.

Our top three pairings for grouper are:

Sauvignon Blanc: The richly satisfying and seafood-friendly Sauvignon Blanc is the perfect pairing for grouper with its crisp, citrusy zing. Try the Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc from the Marlborough region of New Zealand. The Silver medal winner at the Decanter World Wine Awards in 2017 pairs well with all types of fish, including grouper.

Chardonnay:  Chardonnay is known for its crisp fruit flavors and aromas and pairs well with grouper, especially when well-oaked and full-bodied. Try the Rochioli Estate Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, California. It has a fragrant bouquet of honeysuckle, jasmine, and flowering plum that are a pleasing match for grouper.

Chenin Blanc: This white-wine grape has been cultivated in France’s Loire Valley for nearly 1,300 years. Today, it often has tropical fruit flavors that pair well with all sorts of dishes, but particularly well with poultry and fish. Try the Domaine Gaudron Vouvray “Les Vaux Louis” Sec from Vouvray in the Loire Valley. It features notes of pear and quince that will pair nicely with your grouper.

No matter which type of white wine you decide to pair with your grouper, Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits can help. Order the wine(s) of your choice from our online store, and we’ll deliver FREE of charge in Grand Cayman, or visit one of our convenient liquor stores on Island.
