Wine Pairings with Lamb

Lamb is one of the most versatile, richly flavored and delicious red meats. In most cases, except for curries and Greek-style dishes with a strong lemon component, a red wine should be your number one choice for pairings with lamb. Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits offers some terrific recommendations.

Guidelines for Pairing Wine with Lamb

Roast Lamb: The deep, intense color, rich fruit flavor and firm tannin structure of Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the best matches for the richness and texture of lamb. We highly recommend the Cakebread Cabernet from Napa Valley and Intriga Cabernet Sauvignon from the Maipo Valley in Chile. Pinot Noir is a moderately dry medium-to-light bodied wine that also pairs well with roast lamb. Consider the award-winning Chateau St Jean Pinot Noir from Sonoma County, California. Another unique but equally delicious choice it the lively, fruity, fresh and elegant Taittinger Prestige Rose Champagne from France.

Grilled/Barbecued Lamb: If prepared with a spicy rub or marinade, a wine with some sweet fruit is an excellent choice. Consider the Rosemount Estate Diamond Label Shiraz from South Eastern Australia with its blackberry, plum and cherry flavors. If the lamb is marinated Greek-style, with lemon and herbs, a bit less fruit and more acidity, such as from the Fontanafredda Barbera d’Alba from Piedmont, Italy, make a delicious combination.

Lamb Stew: The prize-winning “Marques de Arienzo” Rioja Crianza from Rioja, Spain is an excellent accompaniment for lamb stew (and other lamb dishes). A moderately dry, medium-to-light bodied Pinot Noir, such as the Belle Glos Dairyman Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County (California) is another great option.

Lamb Chops: The 2014 Pio Cesare Langhe Nebbiolo, a blend of Barolo and Barbaresco grapes from Italy’s Piedmont region, is a terrific complement for lamb chops, as is the peppery and earthy Montes Alpha Syrah from Montes, Chile.

Lamb Curry: The success of pairing wine with Indian-style lamb curries depends on the heat level and spices in the dish. A fruity Californian Zinfandel, such as the Napa Valley’s Frog’s Leap Zinfandel, is a great choice. If you prefer a white wine, try a bottle of Blue Fish Riesling from Pfalz, Germany.
