Wine & Pork

Roast Pork

Although you may be thinking that red should go with a roast, white wine is often a better match for roast pork. A creamy Chardonnay, such as the Beringer Private Reserve from the Napa Valley or the deliciously fruity Blue Fish Riesling from Pfalz, Germany, make excellent pairings. When you must have red, consider Italian reds, such as the delicate Peppoli Chianti Classico, or Chilean reds, such as the Montes Alpha Syrah, which are also great with grilled pork.

Pork Spareribs

Whether the spareribs are served with a sauce or a marinade, roasted, grilled or pan seared, we love them accompanied by a spicy red with acidity and low tannins, like a medium-bodied of Zinfandel. Try the Seghesio Sonoma Zinfandel, which is loaded with zesty blackberry and raspberry fruit.

Pork Chops

Pork chops will go with a variety of wines, both white and red, depending on the sauce or preparation. If served with a butter or cream sauce, we recommend the Jordan Chardonnay, one of the best from the Russian River Valley in Sonoma, California. If the chops are being served alongside savory side dishes, such as mushrooms or bacon-laced potatoes, a better pairing would be a more savory and acidic red like the Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir, an award-winner from Walker Bay (South Africa).

Spicy Pork

Flatter the spice and light sweetness of the pork dish with a bottle of Hugel & Fils Gewürztraminer from Alsace, France or a peppery Merlot, such as the highly rated Le Macchiole Messorio Merlot from Tuscany, Italy. If the pork is prepared with Asian spices, the excellent Belle Glos Dairyman Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County (California) is a great choice.

Pork and Bean Stews (e.g., Cassoulet)

These stews can be quite filling so you don’t want a wine that is too high in alcohol. A simple medium-bodied red works with Cassoulet. A slightly fuller fruitier wine is a great choice when the stew is on the spicier side. Try the highly rated Yacochuya Malbec from Cafayate, Argentina, and Layer Cake Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina, the winner of the 2017 Best of Class Award at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
