Types of Wine

Red Wines come from fermented black grapes. Winemakers include the stems and skins during fermentation of red wines. Tannins within red wine create a bitter taste, which are less obvious at room temperature. Older wines also have fewer tannins. If you’re looking for a red wine to try, we suggest Pinot Noir, Merlot, or Cabernet Sauvignon. For meal pairings, red wine goes well with barbecue, burgers, steak, pizza, or pasta.

White Wines can be made with either white or black grapes, but they’re not fermented with the skins as red wines are. Winemakers use only the clear juice of the grape. Unlike red wine, we suggest chilling white wine prior to serving. We suggest Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc for beginners who are trying wine for the first time. Pair white wine with lighter fare like chicken, fish, and seafood.

Rosé Wines have a pink-ish hue that comes from the skin of black grapes being included during fermentation for a short period. This type of wine has few tannins, and the light taste makes it ideal for beginner wine drinkers. Pair rosé with light meals or snacks. We suggest trying the Chateau d’Esclans Whispering Angel or Ch D’esclans The Palm Rose.

Sparkling Wines have carbonation and can be made from black and white grapes. The most common type of sparkling wine is champagne and is used for celebrations. Sparkling wine is most often enjoyed with seafood, soft cheeses, and salad. Before pouring champagne into a wine glass instead of a champagne flute, consider that the temperature and carbonation of sparkling wines are protected within the proper glassware.

Dessert Wines are sweet and usually enjoyed at the end of a meal. They pair well with chocolate, cake, vanilla pudding, and other desserts. Beginner dessert wines are Icewine and Moscato.

Fortified Wines have been supplemented with liquor during fermentation. Some of these wines double as dessert wines since they’re sweetened by the alcohol. Beginner choices include port, sherry, and madeira. These wines have a higher ABV than other wines.

The Cayman Islands offers the perfect setting for a memorable vacation, and Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits is the perfect wine store to please everyone at the dinner table. From dinner parties to beachside girl talk and romantic evenings, pair your Caribbean memories with tasty wines.
