Appetizer Suggestions

It may be just a cocktail party, but your guests may end up sipping more wine that usual, and you won’t want them doing it on an empty stomach. Here are a few recommendations:

  • Prepare a few formal appetizers, and fill out the rest of your table with olives, nuts, and cured meats.
  • A wide range of cheeses and fruit will complement the white wines.
  • Heartier appetizers, such as cocktail meatballs or grilled vegetables, will complement the reds.

Wine Suggestions

Try a blind tasting in which the wine labels are hidden (tip: use wine bags or wrap the entire bottle in aluminum foil), and ask your guests to identify the grape and country of origin based on the appearance, aroma, and taste of the wine.

White recommendations:

  • Chardonnay – Au Contraire Chardonnay (California)
  • Moscato – Cavit Moscato (Italy)
  • Pinot Grigio – Yellow Tail Pinot Grigio (Australia)
  • Riesling – Prum Essence Riesling (Germany)
  • Sauvignon Blanc –Brancott Estate Sauvignon Blanc (New Zealand)

Red recommendations:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon –Heritance Rutherford Cabernet (California)
  • Malbec – Layer Cake Malbec (Argentina)
  • Merlot –Rickety Bridge Merlot (South Africa)
  • Pinot Noir – Elouan Pinot Noir (Oregon)
  • Shiraz/Syrah –Jacob’s Creek Shiraz (Australia)

Number each bottle, provide short descriptions of the qualities and flavors associated with the different wines to guide guests in the right direction, and give them pen and paper to take notes. At the end of the tasting, reveal all the answers and see who correctly identified the most wines. Consider gifting the winner with a bottle of their favorite wine!

You don’t have to be a wine expert to host a wine tasting party. These ideas for appetizers and wines from Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits can help you and your guests on Grand Cayman enjoy the fun of wine tasting and learn something new along the way.
