Wine & Grouper

Grouper is part of the sea bass family. It’s a lean, mild, firm fish that can be prepared many different ways – baked, steamed, broiled, poached, grilled, pan fried, etc. But, before you start trying to pair your grouper, also consider whether a sauce or seasoning will play a role.

Our three favorite pairings include:

Chenin Blanc: This white-wine grape has been cultivated in France’s Loire Valley for nearly 1,300 years. Today, it often has tropical fruit flavors that pair well with all sorts of dishes, but particularly well with poultry and fish.

We recommend the Domaine Gaudron Vouvray “Les Vaux Louis” Sec from Vouvray in the Loire Valley. It’s made from 30-year-old Chenin Blanc vines, and features notes of pear and quince that will pair nicely with your grouper.

Chardonnay:  This popular grape grows all over the world, but some of the best wines originate in France, Italy, California, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Chardonnay is known for its crisp fruit flavors and aromas and pairs well with grouper.

We recommend the Rochioli Estate Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, California. It features seductive citrus aromas paired with a fragrant bouquet of honeysuckle, jasmine, and flowering plum that make it a pleasing pair for grouper.

Pinot Noir: Pinot Noir is a light bodied red wine that is not as robust as many other red varieties. Its lower amounts of tannins enable you to pair it with lighter foods such as seafood. It pairs best with fish like grouper, salmon, trout, tuna, marlin, swordfish, mackerel, as well as fish dishes served in tomato or cream-based sauces.

We recommend the award-winning Rodney Strong Estate Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, California. It has a light body, dryness and crisp acidity that make it easy to pair with fish and a wide variety of other foods.
