French Red Wine Regions

France offers the perfect red wine for every occasion! It can be confusing to know what to look for, however, because many French wines are labeled with the name of the wine region (e.g., Bordeaux, Burgundy), and rarely by grape variety.

Beaujolais: The Beaujolais region is one of France’s most underrated wine regions. The region produces almost only red wine with Gamay Noir grapes. Its soft tannins, bright cranberry, and raspberry-like fruit make it a lot of fun to drink, and it pairs well with virtually any food. Try the Duboeuf Beaujolais-Villages which displays a shiny purple color and is fruity, with aromas of black fruits, black cherry and blackberry.

Bordeaux: The temperate climate and nearby ocean on the Médoc peninsula make the elegant red wines of Bordeaux special. Most Bordeaux wines are a blend of Merlot (with its depth and velvety richness) and Cabernet Sauvignon (adding fruit and body) and are appreciated by serious wine lovers. Try the Chateau Roques Mauriac, a delicious blend of 50% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon that will pair well with your prime rib steak.

Burgundy: Some of France’s finest red wines are produced in the Burgundy vineyards that run through a picturesque valley along the river Saône from Dijon in the north. The region is so well-suited to the Pinot Noir grape that few other varieties are even grown here.  Enjoy the supple red cherry and raspberry fruit balanced with just the right acidity in the Latour Givry, and pair it with duck, goose or other game birds.

Languedoc: Located in the south of France, this is a diverse region that stretches from the Rhône valley in the east to the Spanish border in the southwest. In terms of acreage, Languedoc is France’s largest wine producing region. The primary red grapes of the area include Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet. Try the Hobnob Wicked Red Blend that shows notes of roasted coffee, mocha, toasted hazelnut, and orange zest, and pair it with BBQ, grilled meat, and cheese.

Rhône: The fertile vineyards that run south along the Rhône river from the city of Lyon to the Mediterranean produce hearty and full-bodied red wines, mainly from the Syrah grape. The continental climate here makes it easier for grapes to grow and ripen. A staff favorite at Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits is the Guigal Cotes Du Rhone with its deep ruby color and bouquet of berry and spice.
