Italian Red Wine Regions

Italy is on par with France and Spain as a wine-making country and is famous for having nearly 400 grape varieties. The following regions are famous for producing top quality Italian red wines.

Veneto

One of Italy’s most productive and most important wine regions, the Veneto region is best known for producing sparkling Prosecco wine. The most notable red wines in this region are produced in the areas closest to the Adriatic Sea and Lake Garda, such as Valpolicella, Amarone and Bardolino.

For a good red wine from the Veneto region, we suggest the Sartori Amarone della Valpolicella which is considered one of the region’s most prestigious red wines. This one is full-bodied with deep fruit flavors and supple tannins. It pairs well with chicken, duck and cheeses.

Tuscany (Toscana)

Situated in central Italy, Tuscany is one of the most famous and prolific wine regions in Europe. Excellent red and white wines are produced, but the best known is Chianti.

For a good wine from Toscana, we suggest the Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico from the heartland of the Chianti region. We think you’ll enjoy the notes of red berries and exotic fruit alongside hints of licorice, currants, vanilla, and passion fruit. This Chianti pairs well with pork spare ribs and barbecued steak.

Piedmont (Piemonte)

This northern region produces some of the Italy’s most renowned red wines – Barolo and Barbaresco – both of which are made with the Nebbiolo grape.

For a good Piemonte wine, we suggest the Vietti “Castiglione” Barolo. It is a dark garnet color and features the aromas of cherry and spice, as well as elegant balsam notes of mint and licorice that add a sharper definition. This wine pairs particularly well with lamb and duck.

Sicily (Sicilia)

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and Italy’s southernmost wine region.

For a good Sicilian wine, we suggest the Donnafugata Angheli. It’s a rich, full-bodied Merlot and Nero d’Avola blend that features dark chocolate accents with spicy black pepper. It pairs well with beef and venison, chicken (especially in a tomato-based sauce), and Eggplant Parmigiana.
