Key Information about Bombay Sapphire Gin

During the Middle Ages, gin was invented for medicinal purposes. Bombay Sapphire Gin evolved from this first distillation and came onto the market in the late 1980s.

With a focus on flavor, Bombay Sapphire gin comes in a crystalline blue bottle inspired by the actual Star of Bombay, a 182-carat gem from Sri Lanka that is housed at the Smithsonian.

Bombay Sapphire gin is distilled in the Laverstoke Mill building, at a site that dates back to 1086. This distillery traces back to King Henry VIII when he acquired it in 1538. In the time since, several monarchs have visited, including Queen Elizabeth II.

While Bombay Sapphire gin is a London Dry gin, London refers to a technique or style rather than a geographic location. This dry style of gin uses no synthetics and can be made anywhere.

The steam used in the distillation process of Bombay Sapphire gin is the secret to the flavor. The steam infuses the botanicals into the gin for a delicate flavor profile.

Bombay Sapphire Stills Are Named for Historical Significance

The stills used to produce Bombay Sapphire gin are named. The original Carterhead stills were named Tom and Mary in 1987. The addition of two new stills called for new names, Henry and Victoria.
