About Cognac
Named after the town of Cognac, France, cognac is brandy that is distilled in a specific region within France (the Cognac region) from specific grapes.
At least 90% of the eaux-de-vie blend must come from specific grapes, predominately Ugni Blanc (also known as Saint-Emilion). It must be double distilled in copper pot stills, then aged a minimum of two years in oak barrels made from French oak sourced either from Limousin or Tronçais.
What is Hennessy XO?
Cognac has designations related to its age: VS (Very Special); VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale), Napoleon and XO (Extra Old). Hennessy XO is the original “extra-old” cognac and comes from the largest cognac house in the world.
First bottled in 1870 by Irish immigrant Maurice Hennessy for his family and friends, Hennessy XO is elegant, bold, rich and complex, and is a blend of more than 100 different eaux-de-vie from throughout the Cognac region, that have been aged up to 30 years.
The House of Hennessy also has the distinction of creating the first cognac to be designated “very special old pale”. Hennessy created the first VSOP in 1818 at the request of The Prince of Wales and future King George IV of Great Britain.
Hennessy XO’s flavors of chocolate, candied fruit and soft vanilla, and its subtle and lightly spicy nose of warm cinnamon and black pepper create a complete harmony. It won Gold Medals from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2005 to 2009 and 2012, and the Silver Medal in 2011.
Hennessy recommends that you drink XO straight or with a dash of water or ice.
