Types of Irish Whiskey
Irish whiskey is whiskey that’s distilled and aged for at least three years on the island of Ireland. It must include malted barley and can also include other unmalted cereal grains. This results in four main types of whiskey you should know about:
Malt Irish whiskey is made in pot stills using 100% malted barley. From there, the flavor will ultimately depend on what type of barrel the whiskey is aged in. These whiskeys can be spicy or peaty, or they can be more delicate, with floral, dried fruit, and bread notes. Single malt whiskey comes from only one distillery. Bushmills, Tyrconnell, and Connemara all offer single malt whiskeys.
Pot still Irish whiskey is also made in a pot still, but with a mash of a minimum 30% malted and a minimum 30% unmalted barley, with up to 5% of other cereals added. These whiskeys have the most intense flavor with lots of spice. Single pot still whiskey comes from only one distillery. Redbreast, Green Spot, and Powers John’s Lane are makers of pot still Irish whiskies.
Grain Irish whiskey is made with no more than 30% malted barley in combination with other whole unmalted cereals—usually corn, wheat, or barley—and is distilled in column stills. These sweeter, lighter whiskeys are often found in blends. Single grain whiskey comes from only one distillery. Cooley, Teeling, and Kilbeggan are makers of grain Irish whiskey.
Blended Irish whiskey is made by blending together at least two Irish whiskeys, whether single pot still, single grain, or single malt. They are typically lighter and more approachable in flavor. Bushmills, Jameson, and Tullamore are all brands of blended Irish whiskeys.
