Things You Should Know About Mount Gay Rum
Until Rihanna took over the world, Mount Gay rum was probably Barbados’ most well-known export! Here are some interesting facts about the spirit:
- Mount Gay is the world’s oldest continuously operating commercial rum producer. A deed of sale dated Feb. 20, 1703 exists for the original plantation, but a recently uncovered deed from 1654 may mean that production was going on even earlier.
- The Mount Gilboa distillery, as it was known at the time, was sold in 1747 to a gentleman named John Sober who asked his longtime friend Sir John Gay Alleyne to become the manager. The company was renamed in Alleyne’s honor after his death in 1801. Throughout the 20th century, the entire distillery was owned by the Ward family.
- Mount Gay Rum is made from molasses from sugarcane, water that has been filtered through natural coral-stone soil, and yeast. Hundreds of years ago, the distillery was able to get all the molasses it needed from local sugarcane. Today, sugarcane is sourced from around the Caribbean, but only varieties native to Barbados are imported.
- The little red star on the image of the island on Mount Gay Rum’s former bottle label represented Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, and not the location of the distilleries, which are actually in the northern part of the island.
- Mount Gay Rums are matured in charred American oak whiskey barrels. The handcrafted products include Mount Gay Silver, Mount Gay Eclipse, Mount Gay Black Barrel, Mount Gay XO, and Mount Gay 1703 Master Select.
- In 2019, Mount Gay appointed its first female master blender, Trudiann Branker, following a five-year apprenticeship under Mount Gay’s previous master blender.
