Entertain Yourself for Free

Fort George Ruins and George Town – If you’re interested in George Town’s history and heritage, do a self-guided tour of the city and include a look at the walls and cannons that remain at Fort George, the 1790 fortress built to protect the port from attacks by Spanish marauders and pirates. Also check out Elmslie Memorial Church. The chapel was built in 1922 by naval architect Capt. Rayal Bodden from salvaged mahogany from shipwrecks, and the roof resembles a ship’s hull turned upside down.

Mastic Trail – Love to hike? Grand Cayman’s highest point is only 79 feet above sea level, so you won’t find mountains to climb. But that doesn’t mean our tropical paradise lacks mellow walks where you can enjoy the stunning scenery and local birds and wildlife. The historic Mastic Reserve Trail is a lesser-known but worthwhile attraction on the north side of the Island that will lead you through mangroves and old-growth forest on a satisfying four-mile round-trip hike. Self-guided leaflets are available from the National Trust’s visitor center.

National Gallery – Art lovers will appreciate the high-quality collection of Caymanian artworks at the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands, as well as the scheduled and drop-in art classes and workshops for adults and children. Get a feel for the Island’s history through art, from its seafaring days to its development as a global financial center and popular tourist destination. Stroll around the floral gardens and exhibits and learn about Caymanian heritage at the same time.

Starfish Point – The crystal-clear water at this beach on the northeast tip of Grand Cayman, also called Ivory Kai Point or Starfish Beach, is often full of amazing wild orange Cushion Starfish that gather here to feed on micro-organisms found on the seabed, depending on the season and tide. Snap photos, but don’t take starfish out of the water or even think about keeping one (they’re protected by law; don’t risk a fine or prison time).
