French White Wine Grapes

Chablis – Coming primarily from Burgundy, France, Chablis is made from chardonnay grapes. The wine is clean, crisp and dry and is delicious on its own, but pairs nicely with a wide range of foods. We highly recommend the Drouhin Chablis, which is pale gold in color, with candied lemon citrus, soft herbs and a delicate mineral finish, as well as the fresh and supple William Fevre Domaine Chablis, both from Burgundy vineyards.

Champagne –Originating in the cool climate of France’s northern Champagne region, the production process for Champagne resembles that of other wines, but has an extra (and vital) step, during which a second fermentation is started in the bottle by the addition of yeast and sugars, generating the bubbles that symbolize Champagne. You may enjoy the ripe apple and pear notes of Gosset Brut Excellence or the elegant Veuve Clicquot Brut. And don’t overlook the fact that Champagne pairs quite well with food.

Chardonnay – Another favorite of the Burgundy region in central France, Chardonnay features complex fruit flavors and notes of earth and minerals. Very crisp, unoaked Chardonnays make a great appetizer wine, and pair well with pates, sushi, oysters, mussels, and clams. Lower acid varieties are perfect for a wide variety of fish dishes, especially lighter, white fleshed fish. The most complex, rich Chardonnays are delicious with veal, pork, and chicken. Try the Latour Chardonnay Ardeche with your fish and the Latour Puligny-Montrache with your poultry and meat dishes.

Sancerre – Sancerre comes from the Sauvignon Blanc grape and originates in France’s Loire Valley, where it develops a subtle and complex flavor. It’s considered a food-friendly wine. The citrus in it pairs perfectly with poultry and fish, and it’s a wonderful choice with meat, vegetables and a wide range of cheeses. Try the Chateau De Sancerre which has an embracing acidity, bright green and stone fruit flavors, and a zesty and vibrant finish.
