Living in the Cayman Islands

Have you considered living in the Cayman Islands? Here are a few tips from Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits that may help you decide.

About the Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands is a British Overseas Territory and overseas territory of the European Union located in the western Caribbean Sea, just over one hour by air from Miami, Florida. We are located south of Cuba and northwest of Jamaica.

Living in the Cayman IslandsThe Cayman Islands encompass three islands – Grand Cayman (home to the territory’s colorful capital of George Town), Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. The tax-free haven offers one of the highest standards of living in the Caribbean, but the immigration laws are strict.

If you’re planning to work in the Caymans, you will need a work permit unless you are married to or a dependent of a Caymanian citizen, a government employee, or plan to work in a non-profit or educational role. (There are a few other exceptions.) You will find answers to all of your questions at Cayman Islands Department of Immigration.

The Cayman Islands are consistently rated as one of the world’s friendliest countries, and it’s easy to make friends and socialize. Caymanians are incredibly welcoming to their beautiful slice of paradise!

Finding the Necessities

You’ll find that Grand Cayman has everything you could possibly want, from champagne and caviar to furniture and artwork, but most things you buy will be more expensive than they were at home. Food is taxed, alcohol is expensive, and anything that’s imported comes with a heavy price tag.

Visit Bay Market for its wide variety of gourmet, specialty, and organic items, as well as the largest gourmet cheese selection on island. Oriental Market in downtown George Town stocks dry, fresh, pickled and canned Asian products from China to Thailand. And most days of the week you can buy fresh fish directly from fishermen on the waterfront in downtown George Town.

When you need wine, beer and liquor, consider Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits. We are the leading retailer of premium wines, beers and spirits in the Cayman Islands and the exclusive distributor for many fine beer and liquor products as well as award-winning wines and champagnes from around the world.

Visit our six convenient liquor stores, or order from our online store and we’ll deliver free of charge to your home, office, or anywhere else in Grand Cayman from Monday through Saturday.

Once you’re a resident, you’ll probably spend most of your free time swimming, sailing or exploring during the day. If you love sports, you’ll find football, cricket, basketball and rugby leagues to join. Grand Cayman also has a fairly good nightlife thanks to its many bars, restaurants, cinemas, shopping areas, and clubs.

Living in the Cayman Islands can take a bit of preparation, and the knowledgeable locals at Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits are happy to offer tips and suggestions to make the transition easier!
