Guide to White Wine

There is a lot to know about white wine, and we hope the following descriptions and tips will help you decide what to try next!

Chablis: Chablis is a Chardonnay-making wine region in Burgundy, France. Unlike other Chardonnay wines, however, Chablis is usually unoaked. It has a lean and elegant taste with light-bodied flavors of citrus and pear. Try a bottle of Drouhin Chablis paired with chicken, fish or sushi.

Chardonnay: Chardonnay is the most planted white wine grape in the world, but California’s wines are among the most highly regarded. It has buttery aromas and spicy notes. Try Au Contraire Chardonnay from California’s Russian River Valley paired with mild cheeses, seafood, chicken, or pork.

Gewürztraminer: Germany and Alsace specialize in this spicy white wine, but you’ll find good examples from New Zealand, Oregon and California. It is very similar to Moscato and is an aromatic grape with a sweet flavor. Try Hugel Gewurztraminer from Alsace paired with spicy foods, such as Asian, Indian and Middle Eastern food.

Moscato/Muscat: The best examples of this refreshing aromatic wine come from Italy, France and Spain, but it can also be found in Greece, Israel and Australia. Moscato is the Italian name for Muscat Blanc, one of the oldest wine grapes in the world, and is famous for its sweet flavors of peaches and orange blossom. Try Cavit Moscato from Lombardy, Italy paired with seafood or cheese.

Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris: Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris are the same grape; one is the Italian name, the other is French. It has crisp, light, fruit flavors. In addition to Italy, France, Germany and California, it has also become the pre-eminent white wine grape from Oregon. Try Ruffino Lumina Pinot Grigio from Italy. It pairs well with seafood and pasta dishes.

Riesling: Rieslings are among the finest light, fruity wines in the world. Some of the best come from Germany and Austria, but France, Washington and Australia are close behind. Traditionally, most Rieslings are on the sweet side, but you will also find excellent dry varieties. Try Becker Pfalz Riesling from Pfalz, Germany. The wine pairs well with seafood and Asian foods.

Sauvignon Blanc/Fumé Blanc: Fumé Blanc is the same grape as Sauvignon Blanc. A dry, crisp wine, it is the benchmark white wine of New Zealand but is a major player in France, Austria, Australia, Chile and California. Try the award-winning Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand’s Marlborough region. Sauvignon Blanc pairs well with everything from salads to seafood.
