Supplies

When deciding which Scotch whiskies to taste for the evening, you should either offer your guests an option from each of Scotland’s five whisky-producing regions (including Highland, Lowland, Speyside, Campbeltown and highly peated Islay whiskies), or choose different products and age expressions from a single distillery for your guests to compare. Either way, stick with single malt Scotch and limit the selections to six to eight different whiskies.

At Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits, whisky lovers have dozens of choices, such as Macallan (considered by experts as “the single malt by which others must be judged”), Glenlivet, Cutty Sark, Ardbeg, Aberlour, Glenkinchie, Laphroaig, Bell’s and Buchanan’s Scotch whiskies.

Appetizers

Considering the amount of whisky that will be consumed during your tasting party, snacks will help to coat the stomachs of your guests and act as palate cleansers between different Scotch selections. Good options for whisky pairings include hearty English-style cheddar cheese and crackers, prosciutto skewers, hummus and pita chips, smoked salmon, sushi, finger sandwiches made with toast and Brie, and chocolate desserts.

Glassware

There are sometimes dozens of aromas in a single malt Scotch. So that your guests can appreciate them fully, choose a traditional tulip-shaped tumbler, also known as a “nosing glass” or “snifter.” The tulip-shaped glass helps to better identify and appreciate the flavors and aromas of the Scotch.

Pour Small

Pour each guest a small measure or “dram” (about one and a half ounces) of each single malt whisky. Downing half a dozen full pours of 90-proof liquor will hamper their ability to taste with accuracy and distinguish the flavor characteristics of each whisky.
