Wine Myths & Facts

When choosing wine, many people have their favorite grapes, producers, or wine regions, but there are some myths about wine that could cause you to miss out on some unexpected surprises.

Myth: Expensive wines are better wines.
Fact: This is not necessarily true. Many factors can cause the price of one wine to be higher than another, such as manufacturing location, ingredients, brand reputation, celebrity endorsements, and so on. There is no guarantee that higher-priced wine will be of better quality.

Myth: Old wines are better.
Fact: This is wrong for several reasons. First, age does not automatically make a wine better. A bad young wine will only grow up to be a bad old wine. Second, most white wines do not benefit from long aging periods and are designed to be enjoyed within a few years of bottling. Even the majority of red wines are designed to be consumed within five years.

Myth: Good wines should always be sealed with a cork.
Fact: The belief is that cork is better because it allows tiny traces of oxygen to leak into the wine, helping with the aging process. Recent innovations, however, have produced twist-off tops that allow some oxygen in while protecting the wine from harmful oxidation. Today, even super-premium wines are using screwcaps.

Myth: Thicker bottles mean better quality.
Fact: Bottle size and thickness has nothing to do with a wine’s quality. It may be more expensive because the winery has made a substantial investment in the packaging. This is primarily a marketing tactic, and a heavier bottle does not equal exceptional wine. Some also believe that the bottle’s punt, the dimple at the bottom of the bottle, is a sign of the wine’s quality. Once again, the punt is just part of the bottle’s design and has nothing to do with the wine inside.

Myth: Sweet wines are only for beginners.
Fact: Wines with sweet, fruity, and bubbly taste are not lesser in any way and are enjoyed by casual drinkers and wine connoisseurs alike. Some of the most prized wines in the world are sweet wines. Sauternes, for example, are very flavorful and rank up there with the best wines money can buy.
